"I nearly said I was too busy. Two hours later I was walking back to the office with a smile I couldn't explain to anyone."

Susan chose companionship visits because she misses her own grandmother. On a Tuesday afternoon she sat with Margaret, eighty-four, over a pot of tea and a box of old photographs.

Why it matters

Your presence can mean more than you imagine

For someone experiencing loneliness, a friendly conversation can make a day feel different. Many people across UK communities live with isolation or limited support, and for some, one visit or shared activity is among the few meaningful connections in their week.

Behind every figure is someone waiting for a knock at the door, a familiar voice or a reason to look forward to Thursday. Your hour may be the moment their week turns.

Connection

Genuine relationships built through shared moments, conversation and time together.

Purpose

The fulfilment that comes from contributing your time and abilities to others.

Belonging

A stronger community where people look out for one another.

Your journey

Your volunteering journey in five steps

Volunteering fits around your working day. Here is how it works, from your first invitation to seeing what your time has achieved.

  1. 01

    Join Care to Volunteer

Accept your invitation and create your profile with the causes, skills and availability that suit you.

Most people start the same way Susan did: curious, a little unsure, and short on time. You simply tell us what matters to you and when you are free.

  2. 02

    Discover opportunities

Browse activities shaped around your interests, location and the time you have.

Perhaps a reading session at a nearby school, an afternoon at a food hub, or an hour of conversation with someone who rarely has visitors. You choose what feels right.

  3. 03

    Get ready

Complete any short preparation or suitability steps your chosen role requires.

Before your first visit you will know who you are meeting, what to expect and who to call. Nobody is expected to arrive knowing everything.

  4. 04

    Make a difference

Take part, connect with people and contribute alongside a friendly local partner.

This is the part people remember. A shared laugh, a story about the old high street, a cup of tea that goes cold because the conversation is too good.

  5. 05

    See your contribution

Your confirmed hours and activities build a personal record, with milestones and recognition along the way.

Afterwards, your time is recorded so you can look back on what you have given. Many find that one visit quietly becomes a habit.

A story from a visit

A Tuesday with Susan and Margaret

Susan admits she stood at the door for a moment before knocking. What would they talk about? Would it be awkward?

Margaret answered with the kettle already on. Within ten minutes the photographs came out: her wedding, the shop she ran for thirty years, the street as it used to be. Susan mostly listened, and that turned out to be exactly what was needed.

When it was time to leave, Margaret asked whether she might come again. Susan has visited every other week since.

Small moments, real connection

You do not need a remarkable skill to make someone’s day

Listening over a cup of tea. Helping someone feel more confident online. Preparing a meal alongside new people. The ordinary things you can offer may be exactly what someone needs.

Choose something that feels right for you. Care to Volunteer organises the practical arrangements and preparation, leaving space for the human part: being there, taking part and getting to know your community.

Sometimes the biggest difference begins with simply showing up

For some people, days can pass without meaningful contact. A visit or a practical task may feel small to you, yet it can bring comfort, dignity and reassurance to the person receiving it.

Volunteering is not only about giving time. It is about giving presence.

Book & participate

Booking that respects your working day

Taking an afternoon out to volunteer should feel easy, not like another task on your list.

Pick an opportunity that fits your week and request your place. If your employer asks for line-manager approval, that happens quietly in the background, so you are not chasing anyone.

Once your place is confirmed it goes straight into your calendar, and you will get a gentle reminder before the day. All you need to do is turn up.

On the day

Check in, take part, get recorded

A quick QR check-in or confirmation from the community organisation records your attendance, so your hours are added to your profile.

What you gain

When you give your time, you gain something too

Whatever your role or background, volunteering offers new connections and a different perspective. You do not need to be extraordinary to make a difference: kindness, patience and a willingness to listen matter most, and we explain any requirements for each setting before you begin.

New connections

Meet people and lives beyond your familiar circle.

Skills and confidence

Use and develop your abilities in new settings.

A sense of purpose

Contribution that feels meaningful beyond the daily routine.

A connected community

Be part of a place where people look out for one another.

Recognition

Every contribution deserves recognition

Your time is genuinely valued. Recorded hours, causes supported and milestones reached build into a personal profile, with recognition along the way.

XP tracks your personal progression. It is separate from your employer's Social Value reporting.
